James is a patent attorney with a chemistry background and a particular interest in chemical and medicinal inventions, with experience across Australian, European and US patent practice.
Service Areas
James has had a longstanding interest in IP after stints working in academic and industrial settings. He enjoys interacting with inventors to aid them in finding success in their commercial journey. He has experience in drafting, advising on, and prosecuting patents over a wide scope of technologies in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and at the USPTO. He has further experience in managing a large patent portfolio throughout South East Asia. He has a general enthusiasm for all things science with a particular emphasis in chemical and medicinal inventions.
His diverse postdoctoral work at Monash University included total synthesis of the tricyclic marine alkaloids (-)-lepadiformine and (-)-fasicularin, and the design and synthesis of novel peptide analogues which have potential for use as non-opioid analgesics. He was also involved in the production and examination of several organometallic complexes for olefin metathesis to be used in production of functionalised nylon monomers.
He completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham, focusing on the biomimetic synthesis of natural products. Alongside this work, he also developed methodology for the synthesis of amide bonds, aryne functionalization and azide reduction. Furthermore he aided in authoring a book chapter concerning the application of electrocyclization reactions in natural product synthesis and was the recipient of a prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry scholarship.
While completing his MSci he undertook projects at both AstraZeneca and Pfizer working on antileukemic compounds of interest and flow technology respectively. James has published many articles in internationally recognised journals.
