Patent and Trade Marks Attorney

With a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) from Flinders University of South Australia, Alyssa has a background in electronics, control systems, physiology and anatomy, neuroscience and medical physics. She is also the practice team leader of POF’s Electronics, Physics and IT (EPIT) team and a POF Board member since 2022.

Alyssa has over 20 years’ experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a wide range of medical-related technologies, including automated drug delivery, dental devices, image processing, implants, laboratory instrumentation, medical software, movement monitoring, orthopaedic devices, remote monitoring systems, respiratory therapy, surgical instruments and procedures, vascular implants and women’s health for local and international clients. Alyssa enjoys working with chemistry and biotech colleagues to protect interdisciplinary innovations that combine engineering with chemistry and cell-based technologies.

Alyssa provides client-focussed and commercially minded advice on global IP protection and enforcement strategies to a range of start-ups, individuals and larger organisations. As machine learning and AI becomes increasingly present in medical technology, a large part of Alyssa’s current practice involves navigating the complex and evolving legal landscape uniquely affecting medical technologies impacted by the law on patentability of both medical methods and computer implemented inventions.

Prior to joining Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick, Alyssa worked as a Biomedical Engineer in Australia and the United States. In 2013, Alyssa was elected to the FICPI Australia Council, a position she still holds.
