Scott is a registered Australian and New Zealand patent attorney with more than 20 years of experience dealing with intellectual property (IP) matters in a range of disciplines in life sciences, including biotechnology, molecular genetics, molecular biology, genomics, medical diagnostics, and agricultural biology.

He is also the firm’s point of contact for AgTech and FoodTech related subject matter.
Scott also has over ten years of academic and commercial research experience in the biotechnology sector. His PhD studies focussed on identifying genes associated with human disease, including cancer. This work led to many peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Genetics and Lancet.
Scott has extensive experience in the management of IP portfolios, having worked for an Australian biotechnology company for over four years. Prior to joining Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick, Scott spent over three years with another large patent attorney firm in Melbourne.
As a result of Scott’s academic, industrial and IP experience, he understands the importance of protecting and managing IP, having dealt with IP issues from a client’s perspective. His experience enables him to advise clients on all aspects of securing and enforcing IP rights, including: patent drafting; foreign and Australian patent prosecution; freedom to operate, novelty and infringement opinions; and patent oppositions. His local clients include universities, research institutes, CRCs, SMEs, and multinationals.
