About Margaret

Margaret has devoted her professional career to helping clients in the intellectual property (IP) space protect, commercialise and enforce their valuable rights. With over 25 years’ experience in private practice, Margaret is versatile, being able to draft and negotiate IP agreements as well as represent clients when their rights are infringed. Margaret possesses a detailed knowledge of IP law, as witnessed by her lecturing in IP at Victoria University and having contributed to the Copyright section of the legal encyclopaedia, The Laws of Australia – The Law Handbook, and the Copyright section of the 2018 Law Handbook. She uses this expertise to give practical, commercial advice to her clients.

Margaret commenced her professional career working for a Federal Court judge who had a special interest in copyright law. Since then, Margaret has developed particular expertise in copyright law, including its application to social media. She has also acted in many trade mark oppositions – disputes before the Trade Mark Office regarding whether a trade mark can be registered on or should be removed from the Trade Marks Register. Margaret performs her own advocacy at the hearings of such disputes.

Margaret has drafted and negotiated all manner of IP agreements throughout her long career including patent and trade mark licences and assignments, website agreements, confidentiality agreements, trade mark co-existence agreements, distribution agreements, software agreements and consultancy agreements. She drafts agreements to protect the interests of her clients and can see the pitfalls for her clients in draft contracts that may be provided by other parties. She has also helped her clients when they needed advice on a wide range of IP, consumer protection, contractual and labelling law issues.
