Justin’s PhD research led to the discovery of microorganisms (endophytic actinobacteria) that inhabit healthy cereal plants where they enhance plant growth and provide disease resistance. After completing his PhD, Justin undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University in the United States where he studied the molecular basis of plant-microbe symbioses.

Justin is an author on publications in several peer-reviewed journals, and an inventor on a patent relating to endophyte technology. Justin was also a recipient of an Australian Museum Eureka Prize in 2004.
