Profile: Neil Ireland majored in chemistry in his university studies. The research covered in his thesis entitled "Total Synthesis of Tropoloisoquinoline Alkaloids Imerubrine and Grandirubrine" has led to him being a co-author of six research publications in the chemistry field.

After graduating, Neil worked in the Research and Development division of the Australian subsidiary of an international food company prior to joining Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick. This industrial experience assists Neil in understanding intellectual property issues from a client’s perspective.

Neil joined the firm in 1996, became an associate in 1999 and a partner in 2001. Neil is the head of the firm's Chemistry group and is a member of the Management Committee. He is primarily involved in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in Australia and other jurisdictions.

Neil was awarded the Institute prize by the Institute of Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys of Australia for high academic achievement in the qualifying examinations.

Neil’s relevant experience includes:

Monash University – this work is primarily related to patents in the area of Alzheimers disease diagnostics based on the identification of biomarkers for this disease state.

Mimetica Pty Ltd – This involves preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the area of peptide mimetics, which may be useful in a number of clinical conditions.

S*BIO Pte Ltd – This work relates to the protection of small molecule pharmaceuticals as anti-cancer agents and included drafting and filing 11 provisional patents.
