Profile: After graduating, Ray was resident tutor in chemistry at the University College of Melbourne University from 1982 to 1984. His postgraduate studies examined the synthesis of tetracyclic anticancer drugs.

Ray joined ICI Australia in 1983, working initially as a synthetic chemist in herbicide research before transferring to the Patent section 1984. Between 1984 and 1991 Ray was responsible for liaising with technical staff at ICI Australia and drafting patent applications relating to pharmaceuticals, veterinary products, pesticides, polymers and explosives. Ray was also responsible for prosecuting applications overseas particularly in the US and Europe, and for reviewing and supervising maintenance of patent portfolios of several ICI operating groups in Australia.

Ray's technical speciality is Organic Chemistry with emphasis on pharmaceuticals, pesticides and polymer chemistry.

Ray’s current practice involves advising clients and drafting patent applications and obtaining and enforcing patent rights for major Australian and overseas clients. He has also been involved in handling large oppositions and supporting litigation for clients. Ray also specialises in advising clients on strategies for building a patent portfolio in Australia and overseas.

Ray has drafting experience in the areas of pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, agrochemicals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, industrial and mining chemicals and nanotechnology.

Ray has been identified in the ALB Intellectual Property Law Guide (March 2009) for his chemistry IP work.
