Local and Global Influence - Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick

International influence

Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick has always been active in promoting intellectual property internationally, through attending conferences and meetings overseas and by being active on committees and councils of international professional associations. This allows us to remain abreast of global IP developments as they occur, so that our clients can benefit from always having access to the latest in IP news and information.

This also means that we are sometimes able to exert some influence over the development of IP laws around the world, even though Australia is a relative minnow on the global IP scene - our clients' concerns and needs sometimes can have an international impact through our professional links.

For example, senior members of the firm have for many years been influential within one of the world’s largest group of patent professionals, the International Federation of Intellectual Property Practitioners (FICPI). We also make significant contributions to other large international associations, such as the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), the International Trademark Association (INTA), the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA).

Australian involvement

Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick has also been continuously active in assisting the development of intellectual property within Australia. Several of our attorneys have been on the Council of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, where we regularly play a key role in the development of Australian intellectual property legislation.

We have provided Board Members for the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys (the body responsible for regulating and controlling the profession in Australia), and we regularly play roles in many of the local legal associations, such as the Licensing Executives Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Law Institute of Victoria, the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association and the Victorian Society of Computers and the Law.

Our professionals are also involved in various local professional and technology associations, where we are able to keep abreast of the latest technical advances and maintain external contact with many of our clients. These associations include the Institution of Radio and Electronics Engineers, The Institution of Engineers Australia, the Australian Institute of Physics, the Australian Computer Society, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, the American Chemical Society, the Australian Biotechnology Association, the Australasian Research Management Society, the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Australasian Institute Of Mining And Metallurgy.

Sharing our knowledge

For us, our work is a lifelong learning experience. We love to learn new things, and we love to share our knowledge with others. So we make substantial investments in education: education of our employees through in-house seminars, tutorials and training programs; education of our clients and the general public through newsletters, external seminars and other initiatives; and education of members of the profession through our contributions to the South East Asian Drafting program (SEAD), the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys’ Academy of Education, and as Examiners for professional examinations conducted in the past by the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.

It is our long-held view that this education and awareness is crucial to the effective exploitation of your intellectual property. We are inspired by your work and enthusiastic about our own.
